Employee Engagement


Resting at the core of employee engagement is the need for employee fulfillment and job satisfaction, yet half (49% to be exact) of employees are dissatisfied and unfulfilled with work according to recent social research. Employees need engagement. "Engagement in what, and to fulfill what needs?" you may ask.

Full employee engagement is marked by learning, growing, and doing more. Employees who are fully engaged will contribute at optimal levels over long periods of time, sometimes decades, and feel great satisfaction in doing so. Part I of this column identifies individual and social needs of employees that must be fulfilled for them to be committed to strong workplace engagement. Part II, published in the next Career Column, will take a closer look at organizational structures and supports that can be put in place to enhance employee engagement and satisfaction with the work at hand.
